Christmas Time Cleaning: Don’t Forget the Carpets!

We all know it’s coming, yet for some reason the amount of time and effort involved in preparing for Christmas always seems overwhelming. It’s not always the decorating and present buying that catch us off guard though. As with packing in preparation to move to a new home, it’s all those little last minute items that seem to take forever. There’s cleaning the bathrooms, doing the dishes, moping the kitchen floor, vacuuming the carpet — then it hits you. The carpet, it hasn’t been cleaned all year!

This aspect of your pre-Christmas cleaning isn’t as terrible as it sounds though. In many people’s minds, carpet cleaning is a job best left to the professionals, but it really doesn’t have to be. For around fifty pounds and a couple hours of your time, you can do the job yourself. There are a few companies that rent carpet cleaning equipment, as well as carpet cleaning and carpet protection supplies and attachments. Most of the shampoo, pre-spotters, and de-foamers sold by these companies are child friendly as well as pet friendly, although standard chemical safety precautions should always be abided by. Those with strong allergic reactions to certain substances should also use caution or avoid treating carpets with chemical solutions. Often, just using hot water can work almost as well.

After a good hoover of your home’s carpet, moving the furniture, and maybe a little pre-spotting work on high-traffic areas or stains, you can begin the carpet cleaning process. A standard 20 x 20 foot room generally takes about 15-30 minutes to complete, although the condition of the carpet as well as stain work can add time to the process. Drying time certainly varies depending on a room’s ventilation and weather conditions, however, not walking on the carpet for 12 to 24 hours after cleaning, or until it is completely dry, is optimal.

An upholstery attachment can be a valuable item to rent as well, enabling you to do hard to reach carpet edges, stairs, and furniture. If the process sounds like a bit of work, it is, but it can save you a lot of money. If you’re not up for the work, remember, a professional carpet cleaner will always be willing to do the job for you!
